At one time or another, we all end up with an ingrown hair or two. The key to success is having a method for getting rid of an ingrown hair.
Far too many people scratch and scrap at the skin in an attempt to remove the hair. They may have success in removing the hair but often also end up with scabs and wounds that look worse than the hair did. Worse still, many people can finish up with an infection.
As luck would have it, there is a more sensible approach.
Step 1
Disinfect the area with a trusted disinfectant.
Step 2
Soften the skin by placing a warm, damp cloth over the area for a few minutes or take a bath with Epsom Salts.
Step 3
Gently exfoliate the area to loosen the skin and remove any skin debris. Salt is useful here too as salt is a perfect, natural exfoliator. Either put a little salt on a cleansing pad and exfoliate with it or make up a salt solution with 1 - 2 teaspoons of salt and 250ml of water.
Step 4
Try to dislodge the hair by scraping a disinfected cotton bud over the hair, in the opposite direction to growth. The hair may come out this way however, if you need to go a little further, try tweezers.
Step 5
Having the right tools to hand is vital at this stage. It is money well spent to invest in a pair of ingrown hair tweezers. If you get them, you will also be able to use them to remove splinters so they are a worthwhile addition to the first aid box. Once you have sterilized the tweezers, try and grasp the hair and pull the tip from under the skin. It is important not to pull the hair out at this stage. Simply pull the tip from where it has burrowed under the skin and then shave it short to give the hair time to recover from your ministrations. Within a few days, you can remove it as part of your normal hair removal treatment.
Step 6
Lastly, use an antiseptic to fight off any possible infection.
This is a simple guide to removing an ingrown hair.Of course the best thing is to avoid them in the first place. Exfoliating well and moisturizing can go a long way towards helping to prevent ingrown hairs. Specialised products are now also readily available to help prevent and treat ingrown hairs.
